The good folks over at Cancer Council NSW recently launched Fat Free TV. And no, the initiative is not a campaign to ban all those weight loss shows. Seriously, it’s not! Rather it’s an easy peasy way to help parents like you and moi understand just how much junk food advertising TV stations feed our kids.
And you can *rate* those TV shows spruiking a not so healthy amount of junk food ads directed to the kidlets. Genius right?
Here let me give you a visual:
Click on the image and you will be taken to the FFTV site. Then go crazy typing in your kidlet’s fave shows. You will be shocked just how much junk food ads are being shown.
Exhibit A.
Told you!
But why is Cancer Council doing this initiative? I can’t seem to connect the dots. (I hear you ask.) Well, let me give me you the lowdown then. According to Clare Hughes, Nutrition Manager at CCNSW…
One in 4 Aussie kids are overweight or obese. And most of these kids will grow up to become overweight adults with a higher risk of developing obesity related cancers such as bowel, oesophageal, endometrial, kidney, pancreatic and some breast cancers.
I dunno about you but that statement up there is enough to make me eat green leafy vegetables for the next 20 years. Hmmm. Green leafy vegetables.
Geez Brenda, stop blaming the TV ads. Parents are responsible for their children’s viewing habits. Just don’t let them watch any TV.
Well, we could probably do that but seeing that I sometimes need a virtual babysitter so you know, I can go to the toilet in PEACE. The TV is my ally. So banning the TV is not really a viable option at this stage. Ahem.
In all seriousness though. Advertising has got the pester power down pat. So if we can somehow *pester* those giant networks to stop or at least limit the amount of junk food ads being shown on TV then that’s got to be a good thing, right?
And if you don’t believe me when I say those ads are master influencers. Here, watch this clip.
Told you!
Go to their website and add your voice. C’mon do it. Consider it your good deed for today.
This post is not sponsored. The opinions are my own. I did however have been hired by CCNSW to put together the blogger event for them. And it was an awesome event, if I do say so myself. Check out the photos here!

It is up to us as parents to take some responsibility about what we allow children to both eat and watch on TV – This campaign is a great initiative to guide parents and assist them in making good choices and better informing them -save for us watching every single show with them .

Parents have the right to demand a fat free TV especially if these TV ads are affecting children’s health. Do you think television could really bad ads when these ads pay big time? I think there should be a limit to these ads.

Like Your post on on demand a fat free TV.Our children are enticed into think that all these junk food are really good for them . I had a BK’s Whopper yesterday which their menus said contain over 900 Calories, almost 50% of our daily calories in take requirement in just one hamburger, and that does not take into consideration the bad cholesterol that comes with it. Its time that we the public start insisting the the fast food outlets star providing health choice for ou children.

Junk food and extensively watching TV are the two main things that kids are exposed that may have an adverse effect on the heath and well-being, and therefore it is up to the parents to ensure that their kids are not exposed to those, or it should be a controlled situation.
